When you look at the iconic Gemasolar plant in southern Spain — its gleaming solar field surrounding the central tower — it’s easy to forget the precision and engineering hidden behind every mirror.

Gemasolar, owned by Qualitas Energy, is one of the world’s most emblematic concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. Since 2011, it has been quietly producing around 110 GWh of clean electricity every year, thanks in part to its molten‑salt thermal storage system that keeps the plant running long after the sun goes down.

But even the most advanced plants need care. When Qualitas Energy, required the replacement of damaged mirror facets, Qualitas Energy turned to a partner with a unique capability: Rioglass Solar.

A Repair Project That Required More Than Just Mirrors

Replacing heliostat facets is not as simple as swapping out a piece of glass. Each mirror must be mounted on a metal structure with extreme precision so it can reflect sunlight onto the tower with pinpoint accuracy. Even tiny deviations can reduce the plant’s performance.

Rioglass Solar manufactured high‑precision facets and delivered an advanced assembly solution in which the metal support structure is bonded to the mirror with maximum accuracy and consistency. This is where Rioglass Solar stands apart.

A Fully Automated, One‑of‑a‑Kind Assembly Line

To meet Gemasolar’s demanding optical requirements, Rioglass Solar developed a highly automated assembly line designed specifically for attaching mirrors to their metal frames. This isn’t something any manufacturer can do. In fact, Rioglass Solar is unique in having an industrialized, automated bonding process capable of delivering this level of optical precision for this specific facet technology.

Automation ensures every single facet is assembled with the same accuracy — a key factor in restoring Gemasolar’s performance.

Why Precision Matters

In a CSP plant, mirrors act like thousands of tiny spotlights. If each one doesn’t hit exactly the right point on the tower, the system loses efficiency. Rioglass Solar didn’t just meet the optical requirements — it exceeded them. This means Gemasolar can operate more flexibly and efficiently, especially considering changing sunlight conditions during the day or with the seasons.

A Collaboration That Restored a Landmark Plant

The project combined Rioglass Solar’s deep experience in mirror technology, CSP optics, and industrial automation. Working closely with Qualitas Energy and other partners, the team delivered a smooth replacement process and helped bring the plant back to full performance. Hernán Llana, Head of CSP at Qualitas Energy confirmed: “Rioglass Solar performed an excellent job in creating this industrialized process and helped us recover this part of the solar field successfully.”

Why This Matters for the Future of Clean Energy

CSP with thermal storage plays a unique role in the energy transition: it provides renewable electricity even at night, supports grid stability, and can be hybridized with other technologies. Rioglass Solar’s innovation — especially its automated facet assembly process — strengthens the reliability and competitiveness of CSP at a time when flexible, dispatchable renewable energy is more valuable than ever.
